Negative-index metamaterials: second-harmonic generation, Manley–Rowe relations and parametric amplification

ثبت نشده
چکیده

Second harmonic generation and optical parametric amplification in negative-index metamaterials (NIMs) are studied. The opposite directions of the wave vector and the Poynting vector in NIMs results in a “backward” phasematching condition, causing significant changes in the Manley– Rowe relations and spatial distributions of the coupled field intensities. It is shown that absorption in NIMs can be compensated by backward optical parametric amplification. The possibility of distributed-feedback parametric oscillation with no cavity has been demonstrated. The feasibility of the generation of entangled pairs of leftand right-handed counter-propagating photons is discussed. PACS 78.67.-n; 42.65.Ky; 42.65.Lm

Second harmonic generation in left-handed metamaterials

The extraordinary properties of second harmonic generation in negative-index metamaterials, where the Poynting vector and the wavevector have opposite directions are investigated. The ”backward” phase-matching condition results in significant changes in the Manley-Rowe relations and in spatial distributions of the field intensities of the coupled waves. 0 0 z RHM

Compensating losses in negative-index metamaterials by optical parametric amplification.

Optical parametric amplification controlled by the auxiliary electromagnetic field enables transparency, amplification, and oscillation with no cavity in strongly absorbing negative-index metamaterials. The opposite directions of the wave vector and the Poynting vector in such materials result in extraordinary optical properties, including "backward" phase matching and the generation of entangl...

Nondegenerate Parametric Amplification in Superlattices and the Limits of Strong and Weak Dissipation

We develop a semiclassical theory of the nondegenerate parametric amplification in a single miniband of superlattice. We present the formulas describing absorption and gain of signal and idler fields in superlattice and analyze the limiting cases of strong and weak dissipation. We show how the well-known Manley-Rowe relations arise in the tight-binding lattice in the weak dissipation limit. Our...
